Night bus (2022)

fIrst person version

There is a never-ending bus in this neon city, bringing its passengers to wherever they want to reach.

Interactive Virtual Reality environment made with Unreal Engine 4. Available in both VR and First person version.

Software: Unreal Engine 4, MagicaVoxel & Blender

Challenges

Playing with VR was such an interesting experience. The initial idea to achieve “interactive” is as simple as adding a looping bus in the environment. But it created trouble when I tried to teleport into it as it has a different height compared to the floor, and I was not concerned with the door size during modelling. Besides, the looping movement made some player to feel motion sickness during testing.

Solutions

To keep the idea of an “approchable moving bus”, I recreated a first person version of this map in UE, where player can use keyboard to walk freely just like normal game. Meanwhile, the VR version provides more opportunities to move around to see the entire environment as player can teleport onto trees or rooftops, at where the sky background can be seen clearly.
